House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) held a news conference on the Republican party's legislative agenda amid White House support for a House-led national security supplemental and a failed impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. On the impeachment vote, Speaker Johnson said he was "deeply disappointed" in the Senate and stated, "If there's ever been a cabinet secretary that deserves to be impeached, he is that." He continued to discuss aid to Ukraine, and the threat of losing his job over the issue. Speaker Johson passionately said he was doing what he believed to be the "right thing" though the threat of job insecurity is on the table. Rep. Marjorie Taylore Greene (R-GA) previously threatened to offer a motion to vacate the speaker, should Ukraine aid come to the floor. Speaker Johnson responded to that threat, saying he had not asked Democrats to help save his job and, " If Marjorie brings the motion, she brings the motion."
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the Senate impeachment trial a GOP "political stunt." He added its "unfortunate" Republicans allow Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to drive the agenda on many topics. Rep. Jeffries' reaction came shortly after the Senate, along party lines, voted to dismiss the impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Other topics he discussed during this news conference included aid for Ukraine and other U.S. allies and the speakership of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA), a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, discussed the conflicts in the Middle East, aid to Ukraine, and congressional news of the day.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), a member of the Armed Services Committee, discussed rising tensions in the Middle East, aid to Ukraine, and Speaker Mike Johnson's political future.
