Following his remarks, the president and first lady helped light the candles. Rabbi Skoff from Park Synagogue in Cleveland, Ohio, and members of his family joined the first family in the symbolic lighting ceremony. Rabbi Gelman, who is the rabbi from the United Orthodox Synagogues in Houston, gave the opening prayer and the West Point Jewish Chapel Choir sang for the president.

The menorah was made in Poland over a century ago and was brought to the United States shortly after World War I.
