President Bush spoke about the history of Hanukkah and the lighting of the menorah at a holiday reception. Following his remarks, the president and first lady helped light the candles. Rabbi Skoff from Park Synagogue in Cleveland, Ohio, and members of his family joined the first family in the symbolic lighting ceremony. Rabbi Gelman, who is the rabbi from the United Orthodox Synagogues in Houston, gave the opening prayer and the West Point Jewish Chapel Choir sang for the president.

The start of Hanukkah for 2005 is on December 25, but was observed early at the White House on December 6. The Park Synagogue loaned the 38-inch gold and bronze menorah to the White House. The menorah was made in Poland over a century ago and was brought to the United States shortly after World War I. close
