Harold Holzer talked about his book Lincoln President-Elect: Abraham Lincoln and the Great Secession Winter 1860-1861 (Simon and Schuster; October 21, 2008). In his book about the presidential transition period of Abraham Lincoln, Mr. Holzer traces Lincoln’s actions in the four months between his 1860 election and his inauguration: a period when seven states seceded from the Union. During this time the president-elect was pressured by Republicans and Democrats from throughout the country to maintain the Union. Mr. Holzer contends that President-Elect Lincoln’s resistance to heed these calls was due to his desire to stop the continuation of slavery and not from his misunderstanding of the seriousness of secession. Mr. Holzer discussed the book with Daniel Weinberg at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. They responded to questions from members of the audience. |
