President Obama addressed the nation following his swearing-in during the public inauguration ceremony for his second term on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol. In his remarks he stressed national unity and called on lawmakers cooperate with one another to confront issues such as climate change, job creation, civil rights, and budget issues, saying “We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate.” The ceremony also included the musical performances, a poetry reading, the oaths of office for president and vice president.
Because the official inaugural day of January 20 was on a Sunday, the president was officially sworn into office in a private ceremony at the White House the previous day.

Covenant House president Kevin Ryan and former New York Times reporter Tina Kelley talked about their book, Almost Home: Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope, in which they describe the experiences of homeless teens in North America and the efforts by Covenant House help them. Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who wrote the foreword to the book, also participated in the discussion. This event was hosted by Barnes and Noble Booksellers in New York City.
Guns and Politics
Airing Time:
Panelists talked about possible gun control measures and gun violence. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said gun control measures needed to include comprehensive background checks and the limit of high capacity magazines. Former Ohio Representative Steven LaTourette said the Republican Party might accept President Obama’s proposals if “common sense” measures that did not place a limitation on the capacity of the ammunition clips were submitted. All the speakers were in favor of closing the loophole that allows any one to buy arms at gun shows and preventing mentally ill people from getting guns.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke at the annual winter meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. He began with brief remarks on the U.S. economy, but the bulk of his speech concerned President Obama’s gun violence prevention proposals.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn gave an update on domestic human trafficking.
Mr. Holder talked about President Obama’s gun control proposals to curb gun violence in reaction to the December 2012 elementary school shooting in Connecticut. He emphasized the need for a balance between protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners and giving the Justice Department and police departments around the country the tools to prevent criminals and the mentally ill from acquiring weapons.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and John Horsley spoke at the Transportation Research Board’s annual meeting. They urged Congress to provide some certainty to the transportation industry by producing a five to six year authorization bill. National Civil Rights Museum Tour

In May 2011, historian Richard Norton Smith led a 10-day bus tour from Asheville, North Carolina to Austin, Texas. The group stopped at several presidential and historic sites along the route. One of the stops was the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. The museum is on the site of the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated April 4, 1968. It opened as the National Civil Rights Museum in 1991; and 2011 marks its 20th anniversary. The museum’s director of governmental and community affairs, Gwen Harmon, led the group on a tour of the museum, which starts with the year 1619 through the death of the Reverend King, and reflects on his legacy.
U.S.-Mexico Border Region

Mayors discussed immigration, trade, and safety issues on and near the U.S.-Mexican border. They focused in particular on increasing trade with Mexico, the future of the Mexican economy, and the need for comprehensive immigration reform. Alan Bersin talked about the changing relationship between the U.S. and Mexico, noting that Mexico had the 13th largest economy in the world and within a generation would have an economy larger than Germany.

In this panel, maternity doctors and health professionals testified on abortion law in Ireland. Doctors told committee members that “there is a degree of legal uncertainty” and recommended new laws that were “workable and practical” and protected the rights of doctors.

Greece had been in an economic crisis since 2009 and dependent on international monetary loans to rescue its economy. He criticized the austerity measures set by the European Union and added that the European Union needed radical changes and "a rational reconsideration of review and strategy". Other topics included Greece’s foreign policy and relationships with other countries, including the U.S. and Israel. After opening remarks, he was interviewed by Mr. Antholis and Mr. Lombardi. He also responded to questions from members of the audience.

Arizona State of the State Address

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) gave her annual state of the state address to a joint session of the legislature in the House chamber.*She said that while the state opted out of setting up health exchanges under the federal health care law it could not opt out of the Medicaid expansion. To protect Arizona taxpayers, Governor Brewer proposed a “circuit breaker” or automatic rollback of enrollment if federal reimbursement rates decreased. She also called for the legislature to approve emergency funding to hire additional child protective services case workers and to simplify the sales tax code.
