David Schwartz presented numerous selections from his online exhibit, “The Living Room Candidate,” which features more than 300 television commercials from every presidential election since 1952. He examined the persuasive techniques employed in these ads and explored the role of various technological platforms - from biographical films to 30-second television ads to YouTube - in the evolution of political advertising. Mr. Schwartz also responded to questions from members of the audience.

A Photographer's View with David Hume Kennerly

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Hume Kennerly shared images of First Ladies. Mr. Kennerly was the White House photographer during the Ford Administration from 1974-77. Adams Memorial

A short piece on the Adams Memorial in Washington, DC’s Rock Creek Cemetery. The memorial rests above the graves of author Henry Adams and his wife Marian “Clover” Hooper Adams, for whom the writer commissioned the memorial after her 1885 suicide. Scultped by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and designed by architect Stanford White, the memorial is also known as “Grief.”

George Washington's Copy of the Constitution

President George Washington’s personal copy of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights was recently auctioned at Christie’s in New York City for $9.8 million, the most ever paid for an American printed book or manuscript. The 1789 book contains brackets and notes in the margins written by Washington himself to mark the powers of the executive branch. American History TV recorded the auction, took a close look at the book, and interviewed specialists at Christie’s and at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the successful bidder at the auction.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation 150 years ago on September 22nd, 1862. It ordered the emancipation of all slaves in any Confederate state that did not return to the Union by January 1st, 1863. No Confederate states returned, and Lincoln signed and issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. This week, history professors and bloggers discuss the debates and controversies over emancipation-its timing, its initial results, and its post-war effects into the 20th century. "Debating Emancipation" was a panel from the 2012 Civil War Institute Conference at Gettysburg College.

Alva Vanderbilt was the force behind the French inspired palace called “The Marble House.” The Gilded Age relic is preserved in the Rhode Island seaside town of Newport -- the storied 19th century resort of industrialists, financiers, statesmen and artists. Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery

America's First Shaker Settlement

Starlyn D’Angelo, director of the Albany Shaker Heritage Society and historic site, talked about the history of Shakers in Albany. The site was home to the very first Shaker settlement in the U.S. The Shakers and their leader Ann Lee came to America in the late 18th century from England. Known for their charismatic worship styles, this Christian sect also promoted communal living and the equality of the sexes, which they institutionalized in their teachings as early as 1780.

Adams Memorial

The memorial rests above the graves of author Henry Adams and his wife Marian “Clover” Hooper Adams, for whom the writer commissioned the memorial after her 1885 suicide. Book Discussion on A Nation of Deadbeats

Author Scott Nelson discussed his book, A Nation of Deadbeats: An Uncommon History of America’s Financial Disasters, in which he argues that consumer debt has underpinned almost every major financial panic in the nation’s history. In each case, the chain of banks, brokers, moneylenders, and insurance companies that separated borrowers and lenders made it impossible to distinguish good loans from bad. Bound up in this history are stories of national banks funded by smugglers, fistfights in Congress over the gold standard, America’s early dependence on British bankers, and how presidential campaigns were forged in controversies over private debt.
Emancipation Memorial

Pre-dating the Lincoln Memorial by almost 50 years, the Emancipation Memorial in Washington, DC’s Lincoln Park depicts the 16th president freeing a slave. Designed and sculpted by Thomas Ball, it was funded by money donated by freed African Americans. Frederick Douglass spoke at the monument’s dedication in 1876, and expressed some criticism about its design and symbolism. It is still controversial today.

Author Louis Masur talked about his book, Lincoln’s Hundred Days and the formulation of the Emancipation Proclamation. One hundred days passed between Lincoln’s preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, issued on September 22nd, 1862, and the final decree on January 1st, 1863. He spoke about the struggle to end slavery, Civil War era politics, and Lincoln’s actions during the period. He responded to questions from the audience.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation 150 years ago on September 22nd, 1862. It ordered the emancipation of all slaves in any Confederate state that did not return to the Union by January 1st, 1863. No Confederate states returned, and Lincoln signed and issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. This week, history professors and bloggers discuss the debates and controversies over emancipation-its timing, its initial results, and its post-war effects into the 20th century. "Debating Emancipation" was a panel from the 2012 Civil War Institute Conference at Gettysburg College.
The Vanderbilts' Marble House

Alva Vanderbilt was the force behind the French inspired palace called “The Marble House.” The Gilded Age relic is preserved in the Rhode Island seaside town of Newport -- the storied 19th century resort of industrialists, financiers, statesmen and artists. The Vanderbilt family fortune came from steamships and the New York Central Railroad. American History TV toured the mansion that the Vanderbilts called their summer cottage.
Newark Earthworks

Archeologist Brad Lepper gave a tour of the Newark Earthworks, which are the largest set of geometric earthworks found anywhere in the world. He talked about how the Hopewell people created and used the pre-historic mound structure and how some of it was preserved.

The Founding of Columbus, Ohio

Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery

Monty Chase talked about the history of Camp Chase, which was named for his ancestor, Salmon P. Chase. It was used during the Civil War as a Union training ground and a Confederate prison camp. Starting in 1895 the deteriorated cemetery began to be restored by former Union Colonel William H. Knauss and an annual commemoration ceremony was begun which continues to be held by the Hilltop Historical Society.

The German Village

Edwards Dam

The Penobscot Expedition and Artifacts from the Defense

Admiral George Dewey

Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation Exhibit

America's First Shaker Settlement

Starlyn D’Angelo, director of the Albany Shaker Heritage Society and historic site, talked about the history of Shakers in Albany. The site was home to the very first Shaker settlement in the U.S. The Shakers and their leader Ann Lee came to America in the late 18th century from England. Known for their charismatic worship styles, this Christian sect also promoted communal living and the equality of the sexes, which they institutionalized in their teachings as early as 1780.

Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial

Historian Richard Norton Smith talked about the statue in Washington, D.C., of Mary McLeod Bethune. Topics included her career and the history of the statue by sculptor Robert Berks. When it was dedicated July 10, 1974, on what would have been her 99th birthday, was the first memorial in the nation’s capital to honor an African-American leader.
Author Scott Nelson discussed his book, A Nation of Deadbeats: An Uncommon History of America’s Financial Disasters, in which he argues that consumer debt has underpinned almost every major financial panic in the nation’s history. In each case, the chain of banks, brokers, moneylenders, and insurance companies that separated borrowers and lenders made it impossible to distinguish good loans from bad. Bound up in this history are stories of national banks funded by smugglers, fistfights in Congress over the gold standard, America’s early dependence on British bankers, and how presidential campaigns were forged in controversies over private debt.
