FEMA Response to Hurricane Sandy

Amtrak Structural Reorganization

Representatives from Amtrak and the United Transportation Union testified on the status of a structural reorganization plan for the passenger rail service. Ted Alves reported that Amtrak had or was in the process of implementing several of changes, such as human capital management and food and beverage programs. He said that the company was focused on operating more like a profit-making business, and that Amtrak had improved its invoice review process and recovered over $20 million in overpayments in 2012.
Republican committee members spoke of Amtrak’s heavy dependence on government subsidies and stressed the need for efficiency.
Safety Risks in Youth Football, Part 1

A panel featuring athletes, administrators, doctors, journalists, and football industry representatives considered the health safety risks of youths playing football.
Dr. Robert Cantu, neurosurgeon and author of Concussions and Our Kids, said that ninety percent of traumatic brain injuries in sports occur while playing football and eighty percent of those happen while tackling. He suggested that no children under the age of 14 should play tackle football and offered flag football as a better option.

Counterterrorism in Africa

General Carter Ham talked about U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Africa. The outgoing Commander of U.S. forces in Africa said al-Qaeda’s affiliate in the North African region known as the Maghreb has established a “safe haven” in Mali. He also described the situation in Mali as “very very worrisome.” He said U.S. government agencies and international organizations are engaged in a process aimed at dislodging al-Qaeda from Northern Mali, where the government lost control following a coup in March. He spoke at George Washington University.
Former members of Congress and Admiral Mike Mullen talked about national debt and national security. Admiral Mullen called on Congress to avert the so-called fiscal cliff and lay a framework for debt reduction and economic growth over the next ten years. He joined former Senators and House Armed Services Committee Chairmen to urge Congress to act and avoid sequestration. Mullen said the next Congress will have to tackle tax reform, entitlement spending, and rising health care cost.
