The Civil War Battle of Shiloh took place April 6th and 7th, 1862 in Hardin County, Tennessee, and resulted in a Union victory over Confederate forces. We visited Shiloh National Military Park, where Stacy Allen, the Park’s Chief Ranger, talked about some of the artifacts on display in the Visitor Center, including battle flags, arms and munitions. He also took us behind the scenes to the Park s storage facility, where he showed us two rare Civil War tents.

Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan participated in a forum with former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Justice O’Connor’s nomination and confirmation to the Court. Sandra Day O’Connor was nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1981 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate 99 to 0. She retired from the Court January 31, 2006.
The justices talked about the evolution of the confirmation process since Justice O’Connor’s nomination. their law careers, and civility among justices. They also shared funny anecdotes and their observations about serving on the Court. James Duff moderated this event in the Newseum’s Annenberg Theater.

Next is film produced in 1961 by the U.S. Army, titled, “Army Digest Number Eight.”
The film includes two programs. 
The first is titled The Mathew Brady Story and is about the famous Civil War photographer. Many photographs were shown.
The second is The Clara Barton Story about the founder of the American Red Cross. Video re-enactments were shown.
The film aired as part of “The Big Picture” series, produced from 1951 through 1971 and shown on ABC and in syndication from 1951 into the 1970s. The series focused on historic battles and figures in U.S. military history. It’s thirty minutes.

Philip Gerard discussed his latest book, Secret Soldiers: The Story of World War II’s Heroic Army of Deception, published by Dutton. In it, Mr. Gerard writes about a once top-secret elite Army unit that used the tools of deception to save lives during World War II. He maintains that these men were not average soldiers. Their ranks included men such as designer Bill Blass, painter Ellsworth Kelly and a number of artists, engineers and musicians. Mr. Gerard outlines their mission as two-fold: to deceive the German Army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops than they actually did, and to draw enemy fire on their position in order to allow Allied troops to advance. There was a brief question-and-answer session following his presentation.
