Senator Byrd on Role of the Senate
July 2, 2010
In this speech from October 13, 1989 Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) spoke about the role of the U.S. Senate and his fear of the impact that the reconciliation process has upon the Senate. He closed with a quote from Vice President Aaron Burr on the “sanctuary” which the Senate is. His fellow senators rose in unison to applaud Senator Byrd at the end of the speech. It is one of his classic speeches that he included in the third volume of his History of the U.S. Senate.
