• 1968 Richard Nixon Speech

    Former Vice President Nixon (R-CA) accepted the nomination to be the 1968 Republican candidate for president of the United States. In his remarks he called for new leadership, and end to domestic protests and violence, and a voice for America's silent majority. He also said he would seek to negotiate peace in Vietnam and work toward the goal of "an open world." The 1968 ...Republican National Convention was held in the Miami Beach Convention Center.     Sen. Kennedy and Sen. McCarthy, candidates for the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 1968, appeared in a short clip from ABC News' Sunday morning public affairs program [Issues and Answers]. Sen. Kennedy died a few days later from an assassin's bullet.

  • Thurgood Marshall Nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court

    A portion of a June 1967 Universal Newsreel about the nomination of civil rights lawyer Thurgood Marshall to the U.S. Supreme Court shows various clips of Mr. Marshall, including with President Lyndon Johnson. President Johnson announced the nomination of the first black man to sit on the Court on June 13, 1967, following the retirement of Justice Tom C. Clark.
