A panel featuring athletes, administrators, doctors, journalists, and football industry representatives considered the health safety risks of youths playing football.
Dr. Robert Cantu, neurosurgeon and author of Concussions and Our Kids, said that ninety percent of traumatic brain injuries in sports occur while playing football and eighty percent of those happen while tackling. He suggested that no children under the age of 14 should play tackle football and offered flag football as a better option.
“Playing Safety: The Future of Youth Football?” was an Aspen Institute Sports and Society Program moderated by Tom Farrey.
