The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe & the Middle East heard testimony on the Bush administration’s proposals for foreign aid programs for fiscal year 1992. The committee specifically heard testimony on foreign aid programs for Iraq and the Middle East, and Cyprus, Turkey and Greece. Mr. Dine justified a proposed $3 billion in foreign aid to Israel by stating that the money was necessary to hasten the peace process in the Middle East, to continue Israel’s defense in the midst of an unstable Middle East, and to ensure the improvements in U.S.-Israel relations continue. Further speakers addressed the benefits of U.S. foreign aid programs to individual countries, and justified specific requests for amounts of foreign aid with the problems the foreign aid would solve. close
