Panelists discussed the topic “Making of the Presidents: Bringing History Alive on the Page.” Three historians who have written about widely differing aspects of the American presidency described the process of making historical figures come to life. They also examined the creative limits imposed by working with facts and documents before moving on to a wide-ranging discussion of the powers of the president and those who surround him.

Patricia Brady is the author of Martha Washington: An American Life, published by Viking. Douglas Brinkley is the co-author of FDR and the Creation of the United Nations, published by Yale University Press and The Unfinished Presidency: Jimmy Carter’s Journey Beyond the White House, published by Penguin. Richard Zacks is the author of The Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson, the First Marines, and the Secret Mission of 1805, published by Hyperion. close
