Tina Brown made opening remarks at the fifth annual Women in the World Summit. Nine women spoke briefly about courageous women around the world. Mamie Gummer read the words of a Syrian girl about fleeing to exile the bombings in her country. Two Syrian women described the bombings in Syria and the future of the country. Cynthia McFadden and David Miliband talked about the lack of humanitarian aid to Syria and the affect of Syrian refugees on neighboring counties. Ukrainian pop singer Ruslana sang her country’s national anthem and afterward was interviewed by Tina Brown. Finally, Thomas Friedman led a discussion with Hillary Clinton and Christine Lagarde. They talked about Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine, women’s rights, sexism, the “glass ceiling” in U.S. and Europe, and Secretary Clinton’s tenure in State Department and her plans for the future. close
