Kenneth Roth spoke to reporters about the release of the Human Rights Watch’s 18th annual 2008 World Report, which included analysis of major human rights issues of 2007, as well as developments over the past year in the U.S. and more than 75 other countries. He said that democracy is growing more popular, with the result that dictators will try to hold on to the trappings of democracy while avoiding actually being subject to the will of the people. He noted that Western democracies are often willing to accept these pseudo-democracies if they are in oil rich countries. Following his presentation, Mr. Roth responded to questions and comments from the reporters. close
