Defense Secretary Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General Martin Dempsey announced that the military was dropping its ban against women in combat. Secretary Panetta said that following a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, women had demonstrated skill, courage, and patriotism and that “unnecessary gender barriers to service” should be removed. close
