The panelists talked about Social Security reform and how women could be affected by changes. Ms. Hurley explained that the ratio of workers to beneficiaries will go down because of the aging of the baby boom generation. She described the benefits that retired workers receive and the difference between benefits for men and women. Ms. Briceland-Betts said that greater numbers of women in the workforce did not guarantee them more economic security since they are often working part-time or in low-paying jobs without pensions. Ms. Briceland-Betts explained how women’s economic security has not really changed compared with the past, in spite of the fact that more women are working. Ms. Beard said that adding personal retirement accounts to Social Security would be a good solution to the need for more financial security for women.
