Rufus Phillips talked about his book, Why Vietnam Matters: Why Vietnam Matters: An Eyewitness Account of Lessons Not Learned (Naval Press Institute; October 15, 2008). He writes about the U.S.'s involvement in Vietnam from 1954 to 1968 and argues that a different outcome was possible in the war. He says that the Kennedy and Johnson administrations failed to develop a popular alternative to the vision presented by the Communists. Following his remarks Mr. Phillips responded to questions from the audience.
