Four writers of poetry, fiction, literary essays and criticism discussed the question “Why read the classics?” The panelists explored issues related to the classics, including: the various connotations of the term 'classic'; the process by which a book comes to be considered a classic; the possibility of having classics in a culture resistant to the idea of authority; and the prospects for continued reading the “Great Books” of the Western intellectual tradition.
