The daily White House press briefing began with White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney talking about the top-line budget plan released that day. He took questions briefly from reporters on topics including the announcement of an intended $54 billion boost in Pentagon funding as part of his fiscal year 2018 budget, an increase that would be offset by equal cuts in other parts of the federal government. Mr. Mulvaney said that agencies would use these base figures to make more detailed departmental budgets. Then Press Secretary Sean Spicer briefed the reporters in the White House and answered questions on a variety of topics, including a report asserting he had pressed FBI and other law enforcement officials to influence media coverage of ongoing investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election and President Trump’s first address to Congress, which was scheduled for the following day. close
