White House

Jay Carney led the daily White House briefing. Topics included the “fiscal cliff” and political protests in Egypt.
Jason Furman appeared at the beginning of the briefing to talk about Republican plans to generate revenue through closing tax loopholes and deductions. He said the plan would ultimately affect the middle class, which was the reason President Obama suggested a combination of income tax rate hikes and limited deductions for the wealthy.
This is a portion of the program.
“Fiscal cliff” referred to the impending tax increases and sequestration budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress failed to reach a new budget agreement. "Sequestration," a legal procedure in which automatic budget cuts are triggered, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011.
