Jay Carney gave the daily White House briefing. The main topic was the “fiscal cliff” of impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 triggered by the debt ceiling agreement if Congress can not reach a new budget agreement. During the briefing, news broke that CIA Director David Petraeus had resigned due to an extramarital affair. Shortly after this, President Obama released a statement accepting his resignation.
