C-SPAN’s Washington Journal examined recent political events through reviews of newspapers, interviews, and viewer comments. In the first segment, The Hotline’s Robert Balkin talked about current stories including the presidential candidates and their standings. In the newspaper roundtable, Former Representatives Robert Kastenmeier (D-WI) and Bob Packwood (R-OR) discussed the budget and problems with the Social Security system among other events. In the next segment, Service Members Legal Defense Network’s Michelle Benecke and Family Research Council’s Robert Maginnis debated the military’s ban on homosexuals. In the final segment, Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Harold Holzer talked about his recent article in the American Heritage Magazine which examined President George H.W. Bush’s portrait recently displayed in the White House. The program concluded with a segment of open phones while waiting for the Senate Special Whitewater Committee to begin. close
