Current news events and political issues were examined through reviews of the morning newspapers; interviews with journalists, newsmakers and legislators; and viewer telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. In the first segment, Mr. Leubsdorf talked about the current debate over the budget, including the debt limit extension. In the newspaper roundtable, Mr. Boren and Mr. Keened discussed current events, including the Middle East peace process and state elections around the nation. In the next segment, General Foote talked about the new World War II Memorial which will be dedicated on 11 November and completed by 2000. Mr. Durbin joined the discussion briefly by telephone. In the next segment, Mr. Westbrook talked about the link between the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and presidential poltics. He also provided a tour of several areas of the hotel. The 1997 inauguration ball will be held there. In the final segment, Mr. Thomma previewed the state and local elections occurring around the nation.
