Historians discussed the future of Civil War monuments and responded to questions from members of the audience. They had each given a presentation at the all-day symposium on the past, present, and future of Civil War monuments, addressing the history of their construction in the North and South, and how public perception, especially of Confederate monuments, had changed.

This was the conclusion of the American Civil War Museum’s 2017 annual symposium, “Lightning Rods of Controversy: Civil War Monuments Past, Present, and Future.” It was co-sponsored by the John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia and The Library of Virginia. close
