Committee members heard testimony from the top allied field commander during the Persian Gulf War and a Defense Department special investigator concerning illnesses which have stricken veterans of that conflict. General Schwarzkopf emphasized that he knew of no exposure to chemical weapons at the time or since, but that it was a possibility. Mr. Rostker emphasized that he is leading the Defense Department effort to fully investigate any possible exposures and any other possible explanations for these illnesses. They both denied that there was any cover-up by the Defense Department of chemical weapons exposure. close
