Wangari Maathai talked about her book The Challenge for Africa (Pantheon; April 7, 2009). In the book she analyzes roadblocks to development in Africa, what international leadership is needed, and the responsibility and accountability of the African peoples. Ms. Maathai also talked about her own history. The guest interviewer was Nicole Lee, executive director of the TransAfrica Forum.


Wangari Maathai was the assistant minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Wildlife in Kenya’s ninth parliament. She is the former chair of the Veterinary Anatomy Department at the University of Nairobi and former director of the Kenya Red Cross. Professor Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in Kenya in 1977.
Ms. Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
