As part of the Institute’s Fifth Annual Symposium Professor Miller talked about his book, Lincoln’s Virtues, published by Alfred A. Knopf. He described Lincoln’s ethical stance on the issue of slavery and explored the issue by looking at the case of Nathaniel Gordon, a trans-Atlantic slave trader seeking a presidential pardon to avoid execution. Though he was notorious for giving away pardons, Lincoln refused the request, noting that it was his “duty” to do so. Professor Miller answered questions following his presentation.

“I Felt It My Duty to Refuse: The Case of a Slave Trader” was a presentation at the fifth annual Abraham Lincoln Institute Symposium “The Latest in Lincoln Scholarship” in honor of Smithsonian’s “The American Presidency.” It was held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. close
