Knopf. He described Lincoln’s ethical stance on the issue of slavery and explored the issue by looking at the case of Nathaniel Gordon, a trans-Atlantic slave trader seeking a presidential pardon to avoid execution. Though he was notorious for giving away pardons, Lincoln refused the request, noting that it was his “duty” to do so. Professor Miller answered questions following his presentation.

As part of the Institute’s Fifth Annual Symposium Professor Miller talked about his book, Lincoln’s Virtues, published by Alfred A. Knopf.
