Current news events and political issues were examined through reviews of the morning newspapers; interviews with journalists, newsmakers, and legislators; and viewer telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail. In the first section, David Dahl discussed current issues including the government shutdown. Laura Ingraham talked about the Republican’s “Dark Ages” weekend in Miami by telephone. In the newspaper roundtable, Bernard and Marvin Kalb (brothers) spoke about current issues, including the budget impasse and its effects. Edward McCormack, the nephew of former House Speaker John McCormack, discussed and refuted some of the comments made about his uncle by Richard Ben-Veniste in a previous Washington Journal. Live interviews were conducted from Mount Vernon by remote connection including Ann Reed, Christine Meadows, and Sally McDonough. Kenneth O’Reilly talked about his book, “Nixons' Piano: Racial Politics From Washington to Clinton.” close
