This panel discussed national urban education goals to be achieved by the year 2000. Education and business leaders considered the tragic state of American inner-city schools and the steps that must be taken to remedy this urgent situation. Problems addressed included: low achievement scores; crumbling infrastructures; an aging teaching population with low minority representation; unequal opportunities for urban youth because of poverty and race discrimination; a lack of leadership collaboration between school boards, superintendents and the community; and the need for politicians to back up their calls for urban education reform and restructuring with the revenues necessary for the job. close
