Historian and author William Davis talked about the different upbringings of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee and how their childhoods impacted their later lives. Mr. Davis argues that Grant’s optimistic and outward-facing worldview were brought about by both the freedom and responsibility he was given by his father. In contrast, Mr. Davis suggests that Lee developed strict regimes and remained isolated from his peers because of his mother’s firm hand and high expectations.
