At a joint hearing on the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act, witnesses testified about proposals to establish an Unsolved Crimes Section in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice and an Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Investigative Office in the Civil Rights Unit of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They talked about several unsolved crimes and continuing investigations the murders of African-American activists and civil rights workers in the South, varying degrees of success in continuing to pursue the cases, and administration of the offices in the Justice Department and FBI. close
