Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony from former Attorney General Edwin Meese and Reed Larson on instances of union-related violence in the U.S. Mr. Meese urged the committee to approve a bill that would make union violence a federal crime which could be punishable by death in some instances. Michael Gottesman claimed the bill would outlaw conduct that was already illegal under state law, and legislate a different standard for union members. Victims of union violence also testified about the circumstances under which they were hurt. close
