The subcommitte heard testimony on the status and stability of the economies in the Commonwealth of Independent States, formerly the Soviet Union, and the newly independent states of Eastern Europe. Witnesses included representatives of the Central Intelligence Agency, which is scheduled to release its final report on the Soviet Union as a political entity later in the year, along with its first report on the economies of the republics of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
