Professor Markovits talked about his book, Uncouth Nation: Why Europe Dislikes America, published by Princeton University Press. He argued that European hostilities towards the United States have preceded the policies of George W. Bush by decades, if not centuries with their roots going back to the approval of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He showed how these aversions reach beyond the confines of politics into aspects of everyday life. In addition, he argued that this anti-Americanism has led to the development of a new kind of anti-Semitism. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions. close
