A hearing was held to examine the adequacy of the federal laws designed to protect the American public against acts of terrorism on U.S. soil and whether additional tools, reporting obligations and oversight may be needed, and the implications to security, privacy and civil liberties of current laws or in any new proposals. The committee had a disagreement over who would be the most appropriate witnesses.

Witnesses testified about the benefits provide by the Patriot Act which removed legal barriers to communication between agencies and allowed for delayed notification of search warrants. They believe that the public is concerned because of misinformation, in particular about what activities of the government are taken under the Patriot Act or under other laws. Also discussed were the problems of fraudulent identification, terrorism financing, the treatment of detainees, and the investigation into the leaking of classified information by someone in the White House. close
