President Obama talked about U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, focusing on political reforms after a wave of popular uprisings in Arab countries from Tunisia to Syria.

In his remarks he praised the democratic nature of the uprisings and contrasted the revolutionary sentiment with the terrorism of al-Qaida, and pledged moral and economic development support to assist the people of the region. He also called for a solution to the impasse in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, specifically calling for a recognition of a sovereign Palestine along the 1967 borders. He remarked, “the status quo is unsustainable, and Israel too must act boldly to advance a lasting peace,” and that “Palestinians will never realize their independence by denying the right of Israel to exist.” close
