President Bush talked about economic challenges including market fluctuations, the mortgage market crisis, and the role of the Federal Reserve. He said that Treasury Secretary Paulson had announced new measures to strengthen mortgages and assure proper risk management in financial institutions.

On March 14 it was announced that Bear Stearns, the fifth-largest U.S. investment bank, was purchased by JPMorgan Chase with help from the Federal Reserve. close
