Former Senator Tsongas held a news conference in Boston, Massachusetts to announce he would not reenter the 1992 presidential race. Rumors had been circulating that he would reenter the race following his withdrawal due to lack of funds earlier in the year. His strong showing in the New York Democratic presidential primary, which occurred without any campaigning in the state by his organization, fueled the reentry rumors. Sen. Tsongas said he would not renew his candidacy because he did not want to tear apart the Democratic party by playing the role of "spoiler". Following his prepared remarks, Sen. Tsongas responded to reporters' questions. He deferred on the question of whether he would run as vice president on a ticket with Democratic front-runner, but would not officially count it out. close
