The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held an oversight hearing on federal recognition of Indian tribes. Witnesses testified about the process by which an Indian group could become a federally recognized Indian tribe or nation; the practice of Indian gaming and establishing tribal lands in order to open gaming enterprises; as well as experiences in recognizing tribal groups in the East.

The first panel, consisting of senators, representatives and the governor of Connecticut, was critical of the process by which their state had previously recognized Indian tribes in the state and a more recent decision to recognize a new tribe.

In the past the United States has recognized Indian tribes through treaties, by legislative action of the Congress, or through administrative decisions of the executive branch. close
