Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont visited Baltimore in late October and early November 1831. Maryland was the first slave state they had visited. Alvin Gillard and Doris Shaw talked about race relations in the Hamden area of Baltimore. It is an historically white area into which blacks have moved, and the school is over 50 percent African-American due to busing. close
