Senator John McCain, R-AZ, and others announced a compromise on tobacco legislation on which the Senate Commerce Committee would vote later in the week. The bill would cap punitive damages at $6.5 billion per year, but would impose a $506 penalty over 25 years. It would also raise the tax on cigarettes by an additional $1.10 per pack and cap the penalty on tobacco companies at $3.5 billion if teen smoking would not decrease by 60 percent over the next ten years. close
