Senator Thurmond was honored at a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of his commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Reserve. The ceremony included a review of troops from the 3rd US Infantry, “The Old Guard,” martial music, and remarks from senior army officers. They praised Senator Thurmond’s service in the Senate and in the US Army. Senator Thurmond is a veteran of the D-Day airborne assault, and saw extensive service in Europe and the Pacific in World War II. He would eventually rise to the rank of Major General in the US Army Reserve. close
