Members of several of the 185 constituent groups making up the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights participated in a news conference announcing the opposition of the Leadership Conference to the nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. Ralph Neas said the main objections of the conference to Judge Thomas were his record as head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where the conference claimed he ruled not by precedent but by his own executive fiat, and his public statements, which the conference said indicated his hostility to civil rights. close
