DeAnne Blanton spoke about the book she co-authored with Lauren M. Cook, They Fought Like Demons: Women Soldiers in the American Civil War, published by Louisiana State University Press. The book debunked the popular images of women during the American Civil War as only self-sacrificing nurses, romantic spies, or dedicated wives and fiancees. According to Ms. Blanton, hundreds of women disguised themselves in men’s uniforms, and fought as Union and Confederate soldiers. Based on research from primary sources, including letters and journals, the book documents the experiences of over 240 women in uniform. Ms. Blanton contends that the women’s reasons for fighting paralleled those of men - patriotism, honor, and a desire for excitement. Following her remarks, she responded to questions from members of the audience. close
