University of Virginia Religious Studies Professor William Wilson outlined the religious beliefs of Thomas Jefferson. Professor Wilson stated that the teachings of Jesus were important to Jefferson as a means of a moral compass but that Jefferson did not believe in the divinity of Christ or that Jesus ascended to heaven. Professor Wilson also made the point that Jefferson was not an atheist, and that Jefferson did believe in the existence of a Supreme Being who was the creator of the universe.
