Lewis Gould discussed the problems and triumphs of twentieth-century presidents in his book The Modern American Presidency, published by University Press of Kansas. The author analyzed the performance of U.S. leaders from William McKinley to George W. Bush. According to Mr. Gould, although modern presidents have been earnest about acting in the country’s best interests, most have foundered under the challenges of an impossible job. He contends that modern presidents are overly concerned with media “spin” and fundraising, but know less about the challenges of the Oval Office than presidents from a century ago. Mr. Gould suggested a reevaluation of what is required from the chief executive. Following his presentation, Mr. Gould answered questions from members of the audience. close
