Michael Shermer talked about his book The Mind of the Market: Compassionate Apes, Competitive Humans, and Other Tales from Evolutionary Economics, published by Times Books. In his book Mr. Shermer argues that the new science of evolutionary economics provides answers to such questions as how we evolved from ancient hunter-gatherers to modern consumer-traders. He uses revelations from scientific methods such as brain scans and behavioral experiments to explain various irrational economic behaviors. He shows how evolution and economics are both examples of a larger phenomenon of complex adaptive systems and examines the tribal roots of brand loyalty, the biochemical joy of business cooperation, building trust among nations, and the consequences of globalization. Mr. Shermer talked about neuroeconomics and the evolutionary basis for thinking on economics and responded to questions from members of the audience.
