Professor Gitlin talked about his book The Intellectuals and the Flag, published by Columbia University Press. The book is a collection of essays encouraging the political Left in America to change the country by appealing to the traditions of equality, community and democracy represented by the flag. During his presentation, the author argued that liberals are also patriotic and accused the current administration and its followers of being “patriots of symbol rather than patriots of duty.” After his presentation he answered audience members' questions. close
