John Demos talked about his book, The Heathen School: A Story of Hope and Betrayal in the Age of the Early Republic, in which he recounts the creation of a school by a group of Protestant ministers in the 19th century. The goal of the ministers was to evangelize and educate students from throughout the world, namely Native Americans and Pacific Islanders, and then send them back to their respective communities as missionaries. In his book, the author reports on the opening of the Foreign Missions School in Cornwall, Connecticut, profiles several of its attendees, and recalls what brought about the end of its operations. John Demos spoke at the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, Connecticut. close
