Paul David Pope, the son of National Enquirer publisher Gene Pope, Jr., recounts the founding of the tabloid newspaper. Gene Pope, Jr., was the son of Generoso Pope, an Italian immigrant who was the publisher of the Italian-American newspaper, Il Progresso. Following his father’s death, Gene was pushed out of the family business by his elder brothers and mother. Left to his own devices, Mr. Pope bought the New York Enquirer with a loan from his uncle, gangster Frank Costello, and remade the paper with a focus on salacious news and celebrity culture. Paul David Pope discussed his book with media blogger Rachel Sklar at the Tenement Museum in New York City. He also responded to questions from members of the audience. close
